5 Apps for Food Discovery

We rely on our smartphones to provide us with simple solutions for our everyday needs. Navigating through traffic, staying in touch with loved ones or finding the perfect dining place where to take that special someone. Regardless of your mobile operating system, chances are there is a multitude of options to choose from, and each will pretend to be the best of its kind. Being a smartphone addict myself as well as a food and drink explorer. I share with you below 5 of my favorite apps for discovering new flavors and venues.

Foodspotting

Free: Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry

Find your favorite dishes or treat your taste buds to a palette of new flavors anywhere you go worldwide. In just a few clicks, you will be savoring the best “Mole con Pollo” of Puebla or the finest duck fillet in Western France. Did I mention the gastronomic photography this app provides?

Foursquare

Free: Android, iPhone, Windows Phone)

Instagram, Foodspotting, Uber. You’ll be surprised by the number of popular apps that rely on Foursquare for location data. And all that knowledge is readily available within their native app. Launch it whenever entering an establishment and browse through tips and comments left by other users. The best part of this app is that users frequently checking in at the same venue become eligible for perks and other benefits from participating institutions.

Untappd

Free: Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry

The social discovery and check-in app designed for beer-lovers worldwide. Explore local popular bars and brews, share reviews and photos of drinks you’ve tried or rely on personalized suggestions to find your next favorite microbrew or unlock achievements.

Taphunter

Free: Android, iPhone

This app helps urban explorers search for new microbrews by location, label, or maker and find the closest bar that has it on tap. Despite the fact that it currently only serves a narrow selection of cities, its focus on craft beers should make it the secret weapon for all tap hunters on a quest for a finer taste.

Nara Logics

Free: Android, iPhone

I leave my very own favorite for last. This “personal discovery engine” provides suggestions based on users’ past interactions with the app: cuisine, venue style, ratings of local businesses. Certainly the best part of this app is the integration of third-party services such as Grubhub and OpenTable adding table reservation and food delivery to the Nara’s arsenal.

I’m sure many other apps, great for food discovery, were left out of this list. So I would love to hear back from you on which one you think should have made the list.
