Willough Vale Inn: Lake Willoughby, VT

Though Lake Willoughby may not be on the typical New Englander’s fall foliage tour, this beautiful lake surrounding by steep cliffs is not to be missed. Lake Willoughby seems out of place compared to many lakes of the Northeast, and the steep tree-lined cliffs prove to be a beautiful backdrop for an autumnal getaway.

Garth Woodside Mansion: Hannibal, MO

Before handy blogs that let people know the top travel destinations existed, travel books were the norm. Though most might associate Mark Twain with the fictional travel adventures of Tom Sawyer, he penned many enormously popular travel books as well. It seems only fitting that his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri would make such a fantastic Fall travel destination. Though Hannibal has a good many beautiful Bed & Breakfast, Garth Woodside Mansion offers beautiful grounds, a close proximity to Twain’s home, and the opportunity to sleep in the most expensive bed in Missouri.

Nesselrod on the River: Radford, VA

Nesselrod is set on the banks of a river in a beautiful small escape in western Virginia. Radford is right along the tree-lined Blue Ridge Parkway, making it a spectacular route for taking in Virginia’s foliage. Radford is also just minutes away from the Virginia Tech campus – Virginia Tech’s colors are maroon and orange — the leaves on campus certainly show their spirit in the fall, and a walk around campus isn’t to be missed.

Villa Columbia: Hood River, OR

Hood River is located in the heart of Oregon wine county and nestled between the Columbia River and the Hood River. Expect fantastic views, and plenty of hiking trails that will allow you to explore the area to your heart’s content. When you’ve gotten your fill of traversing the Columbia River Gorge, pop into one of Hood River’s multiple wineries to unwind before tucking yourself back into a cozy room at the Villa Columbia.

Whispering Pines B&B: Nebraska City, NE

Few things embody the spirit of Fall quite like apples. Whether it’s apple pie, picking apples off the tree, or a warm mug of cider, apples give pumpkins a run for their money when it comes to capturing the essence of Autumn. Nebraska City hosts the annual Applejack Festival, dedicated to everything apple – making Nebraska City a perfect Autumn getaway. Nebraska City is also the home of Arbor Day – what better place to spend a weekend celebrating a season marked by the splendid displays?

Though Fall doesn’t have to many a drop in the amount you travel, for many, it marks a shift in the kind of travel destinations you seek out. We’d love to hear your top Fall travel destinations in the comments.
