Biking through Austria


Austria sits at the crossroads of Central Europe, with much to see and explore throughout the country. It is known for its majestic landscape of mountains, valleys, rivers and storybook villages. Along with such a landscape are the cultural centers of Vienna and Salzburg.

Instead of a regular old bus or walking tour, why not bike through these beautiful cities to see all there is to see? Austria is perfect for cycling because of its extensive network of well-marked and well-maintained paths, as well as its breathtaking scenery! The landscape ranges from flat and rolling hills to more intense riding in the Alps for serious riders. One of the most popular bike paths in Europe rides along Austria’s major river, the Danube. This bike path takes bikers through medieval villages, vineyards, and orchards. Biking through Austria is an unforgettable experience.

This tour will take you to some of Austria’s most impressive cultural sites. Starting at the historic German border town of Passau, the trail follows the Danube River, which is Europe’s second largest river, into Vienna. The city of Linz, the baroque abbey of St. Florian and the many castles along the way, and the famous “Wachau” region with is amazing villages, vineyards, and romantic fruit orchards are just some of the amazing things you will see on your bike ride.

The Duernstein ruins where King Richard and the Lionhearted had been captured on his way back from the crusades is a must-see stop on the bike tour, as well as the 1000 year old town of Krems! If you wanted to keep cycling even passed Vienna, the Hainburg area is close to the border with Slovakia as the end of the marked bike trail.
